Image Editor

Generate, review, and manage AI-generated images for your project's assets using the Image Editor.

Overview

The Image Editor is a dedicated page for generating and managing images associated with your project's assets—cast members, locations, props, and inspiration references. It provides a spacious interface for browsing generated images, viewing them in detail, and performing actions like selection, modification, and organization.

Key Concepts

  • Asset: The parent entity (cast member, location, prop, or inspiration) that owns the images
  • Asset Image: An AI-generated image associated with an asset, with its own prompt and selection status
  • Image Prompt: The text description used to generate the image
  • Selection Status: Mark images as Selected, Rejected, or Pending for production use
  • Canvas: The main viewing area where selected images are displayed at full size with editing capabilities

When to Use the Image Editor

The Image Editor is where you:

  • Generate asset images: Create AI-powered images for cast members, locations, props, and inspiration
  • Review and compare: Browse through all generated images for an asset
  • Select for production: Mark the best images as selected for use in your project
  • Modify images: Use AI to edit or enhance existing images
  • Organize images: Move images between assets or delete unwanted ones
  • Download images: Export images for external use

Accessing the Image Editor

From the Asset Editor

  1. Navigate to your project's Asset Editor tab
  2. Find the asset (cast member, location, prop, or inspiration) you want to edit
  3. Click on the asset to open its Image Editor

Navigation

  • Click Back in the header to return to the Asset Editor
  • The header displays your project name and the current asset type
  • Use browser back/forward buttons to navigate between pages

Understanding the Interface

The Image Editor has three main areas:

Left Sidebar

The sidebar contains asset information and image controls:

SectionDescription
Asset MetadataAsset name, description, and type-specific info (voice for cast, location type, etc.)
Image PromptText field for entering image generation prompts
Generate ButtonStart a new image generation
Upload ButtonUpload an image from your device
Action ButtonsDownload, Resubmit, Modify, Select, Move, Delete (when image selected)

Main Canvas Area

The central area displays the selected image:

  • Scalable Canvas: Image display that adapts to your browser size
  • Editing Tools: Pan, zoom, annotations, and transformations (similar to Keyframe Editor)
  • Empty State: Displays "Generate a new image or select one from below" when no image is selected
  • Loading Skeleton: Displays during image generation

Bottom Thumbnail Strip

The thumbnail strip displays all generated images for this asset:

  • Small thumbnails (80-100px height) to maximize visible images
  • Horizontal scrolling when images exceed viewport width
  • Click a thumbnail to load that image in the canvas
  • Selected thumbnail is visually highlighted
  • Keyboard navigation with arrow keys
  • Hover a thumbnail to reveal a Media Info button (top-left) — see Offsite Media and Fixity below

Offsite Media and Fixity

Some images aren't stored in Genvid at all — their original file lives in your own connected storage, and Genvid holds a proxy for display. This applies to images registered or connected through your organization's storage connections.

The Offsite Original Badge

An image whose original lives in your storage shows an Offsite original badge (a cloud icon, outlined) directly on its thumbnail. Hover the badge for a reminder that the original bytes live in your storage and Genvid is displaying a proxy.

Open the Media Info dialog (click the info button that appears when you hover a thumbnail) to see the full badge alongside a Fixity status:

Fixity StatusMeaning
Verified (time) agoGenvid last confirmed the original still matches its registered content hash
RegisteredThe original hasn't been verified yet
Verification staleFixity verification is overdue
File moved or renamedThe registered content wasn't found at its stored path
Content changed at stored locationThe file at its stored location no longer matches what was registered

Generating Images

Steps to Generate an Image

  1. Enter a prompt in the left sidebar

    • Describe the image you want to generate
    • Be specific about style, pose, lighting, composition
    • Example for cast: "Full body shot of a space pilot in a futuristic flight suit, dramatic lighting"
  2. Click Generate

    • A loading skeleton appears in the canvas
    • Generation may take several seconds
    • When complete, the new image appears and is automatically selected
  3. Review the result

    • The generated image loads in the main canvas
    • The prompt appears in the sidebar
    • Action buttons become available

During Generation

While an image is generating:

  • The canvas displays a loading skeleton
  • The rest of the interface remains usable
  • You can still browse existing thumbnails
  • The new image appears when generation completes

Generation Tips

  • Be descriptive: Include details about style, composition, lighting
  • Reference the asset type: Mention if it's a character portrait, full body, location establishing shot, etc.
  • Iterate: Generate multiple variations to find the best result
  • Use Resubmit: Regenerate with the same prompt to get variations

Uploading Images

You can upload images from your device instead of generating them:

  1. Click the Upload button in the sidebar
  2. Select an image file from your device
  3. The image uploads and appears in the thumbnail strip
  4. Click the thumbnail to view it in the canvas

Tips and Best Practices

Image Generation Tips

  • Be specific: Detailed prompts yield better results
  • Include style notes: Mention art style, lighting, mood
  • Reference existing images: Describe what worked in previous generations
  • Generate multiples: Create several variations to compare

Workflow Tips

  • Select as you go: Mark good images immediately

  • Organize regularly: Move misplaced images to correct assets
  • Clean up rejects: Delete images you definitely won't use

Quality Tips

  • Review at full size: Use the canvas to check details
  • Check consistency: Ensure images match across an asset
  • Consider context: Think about how images will be used in production

Common Questions

Why is the canvas empty?

The canvas displays an empty state when:

  • No image has been selected yet
  • The selected image was deleted
  • This is the first visit to a new asset

Generate or select an image to populate the canvas.

Why are some action buttons disabled?

Action buttons require a selected image:

  • Select an image from the thumbnail strip first
  • Generate or Upload if no images exist

Can I edit an image directly?

The Image Editor supports:

  • Viewing and zooming
  • Canvas annotations (similar to Keyframe Editor)
  • AI-powered modifications via the Modify button

For pixel-level editing, download and use external software.

What happens when I delete an image?

Deletion is a soft delete:

  • The image is marked as deleted
  • The thumbnail is removed from view
  • Data is preserved in the database
  • Recovery may be possible (contact support)

How many images can I have per asset?

There is no hard limit:

  • The thumbnail strip scrolls horizontally
  • Performance remains smooth with 50+ images
  • Consider cleaning up unused images periodically

Can multiple people edit the same asset?

The Image Editor operates in single-user mode:

  • Changes from other users are not displayed in real-time
  • Refresh the page to see updates from others
  • Avoid simultaneous editing of the same asset

What does the "Offsite original" badge mean?

It means that image's original file is stored in your organization's own connected storage rather than in Genvid. Genvid displays a proxy for viewing and editing, but the original bytes stay in your storage. See Storage Connections for how your organization connects its storage. Open the Media Info dialog on any offsite thumbnail to see its current fixity status.
